TIPS TO WORK SUCCESSFULLY WITH PEOPLE OLDER THAN YOU
If your parents were so cruel to drag you to places you never wished to go during your child hood, you probably remember the inescapable discomfort. The adult, in your work places send cold fears in your ways. They, in high-pitched voices, asked what grade you were in, while the people who hated children sent cold stares your way. You didn’t belong there and it showed.
Fast forward a decade or so. You are wearing your new suit and sporting your best smile. It’s the first day of your new post-graduation job and you’re meeting your new co-workers. You hear the same question and receive the same icy stares.
The work place is getting older as older workers are waiting longer to retire; therefore, there’s a good chance your first job out of school will be filled with colleagues who are several years, or decades, older than you. While most people will be glad to have you on their team, not everyone will welcome you with open arms. However, unlike that 8:00am mathematics class you admirably signed up for but quickly dropped, you need to stick with this job. So how do you convince your co-workers that you belong on the team when you’re the youngest worker in your workplace?
FIND YOUR PLACE:
Part of establishing your role on a team in your work place comes with understanding what you can learn from others and what you can offer them.
“While it is important to be knowledgeable, it is more to understand your status,” advised Tina Hamilton, president and CEO of hire vision group, a human resources firm. If you show a willingness to learn more about your position and company, others will be eager to assist you. Most will be pleased to do so and as such will look at you in a positive light - - - if you are inexperienced and attempt to act otherwise, you risk coming across as difficult to work with or immature.
So if you aren’t experienced, how you give back anything to the team?
Simple: use the knowledge you already have. Oha Ben is the youngest person in his auditing agency, and he realizes that his age can be an asset. “Many employers value the new techniques and information you know because you are younger and know a young audience. Make sure you use your age to your advantage. This is especially true with my knowledge of teamwork and other social networking websites. Don’t throw caution in the wind. That you are a youth does not automatically make you an authority on cutting edge technologies like social networking and new media. Avoid arrogance and ageism by assuming anyone over 40years of age has no clue what social networking sites and the current happening in technology are. Always offer your view on any subject matter as a member of the teem, not as the only person at the table whose opinion counts.
BE DEDICATED TO YOUR WORK:
You may not know how to do many things as a beginner, but be dedicated to doing the ones you can do first. You might not become the office darling in a day, but good work will earn you the reputation of a dependable and a hard worker. Earn respect by putting in all effort into your work. It is only through hard work that you can prove to your co-workers that you actually deserve to be there. When your dedication makes you to be the first one in, last one out, it will make you not to be popular, but each time they had to make sure something got done right and in true, you will be the first choice to be considered.
MAINTAIN GOOD COMMUNICATION:
Speak clearly, intelligently and authoritatively. Make sure to consistently use standard business and workplace vocabulary, not buzzwords or cliché, use amour street boys.
DON’T SHY AWAY FROM PROBLEM:
Participate in problem solving and brainstorming. You will only be remembered for two things; the problem you solved and ones you created. Participating positively in problem solving will boost you profile and give you a face-lift. Take steps to consistently offer fresh ideas, perspectives and solutions that can resolve specific problems or situations that will prove that young associated are experienced, insightful and initiative takers. Never you hesitate in doing what will positively make you just a little bit more invincible.
DRESS THE WAY YOU WOULD WANT TO BE ADDRESSED:
The way you dress speaks volume about you. There is no way a supervisor or senior executive will take an employee seriously if he or she is not attired appropriately. Revealing on casual attire indicates a lack of respect--- for oneself and for the organization, and a lack of judgment, neither of which will get an employee anywhere. Be respectful. Dress respectful and you will enjoy a positive work environment among older and senior staffs.
Sincerely Yours

Business and Career.. Know Your Ruling Star
"Know your Ruling Star. One man is better received by one nation than another, or is one welcome by one city than another. He finds more luck in one office or position than in another, and all though his qualifications are equal or even identical. Let each man know his luck as well as his talents. Follow your guiding star and help it without mistaking any other for it. Know how to transplant yourself. There are nations with whom one must cross their borders to make one's value felt."
- Balthasar Gracian, (Spain, 1600's)
Have you ever felt, "Here I am, best job I ever had, good money, an excellent career move - but, what in the world am I doing here where I feel so alone and out-of-place with my surroundings? How did this happen to me?"
I've been there, because someone offered me a job and I accepted, knowing ahead-of-time, intuitively I wouldn't feel at home in the town and surroundings.
Or - maybe you love your location but, sadly, are unable to find any openings in your field. I've been there also. Looking back on my years in Austin, Texas, I can't believe the number of short-term, soul-emptying jobs I tried very hard and unsuccessfully do to. My job-duration ranged from only two hours (which was long enough when you hate what you are doing!) to several months (each day seeming like an eternity) before my opportunities in broadcasting finally came.
It's a rare person these days who is able to say, "I love this community, love my home, love the work I do, get along great with my business colleagues and supervisors. How do you beat perfection?"
There is a wonderful quote I repeated to myself many, many times during my ups and downs in Texas.
"Hence the first principle in changing one's character is to seek another environment, to let new forces play upon our unused chords, and draw from us a better music." - Will Durant
That's what I wanted! I wanted another location - another place - where new forces could play upon my unused chords and draw from me a better music.
"There are nations with whom one must cross their borders to make one's value felt." - Gracian
Yes! Yes! Yes! That's what I wanted. To cross borders and feel my native talents valued again.
"Know your Ruling Star," the Spanish priest Gracian wrote in The Art of Worldly Wisdom. "One man is better received by one nation than another, or is one welcome by one city than another. He finds more luck in one office or position than in another, and all though his qualifications are equal or even identical."
We are better received in certain locations or areas than in others, welcomed when we show up, and we most certainly do find more luck in one place than another.
"But where, where, where is THAT PLACE?" I wondered.
In Texas, for every 100% plus I gave in my career, the returns (feeling valued, appreciated, and being monetarily rewarded), always fell short.
I hosted a noon talk show for awhile at an Austin TV station. Our ratings were great. The guests I booked were top names in the literary, entertainment, self-improvement, and political arenas.
After our ratings came in one spring, I couldn't believe how well the show was doing.
Several days later, however, the General Manager wanted to see me.
After all the years of my show's success, he said, "James, I can't complain about your ratings. That's good for ad revenue, but I finally got a chance to see your show yesterday. As you know I only have a tenth grade education, never finished high school, started in sales, worked my way up to where I am today." He beamed proudly, "I didn't understand it."
I knew when he said, "I didn't understand it," my show was doomed.
The GM was the standard by which all business decisions at our stations were made.
I wanted to call him, "Idiot," but restrained myself.
My favorite line in Texas TV came from a female news director who told me, "You have a master's degree. We don't need people that smart to do the news." I never worked at that station.
"Let each man know his luck as well as his talents. Follow your guiding star and help it without mistaking any other for it. Know how to transplant yourself," Gracian reminds us.
Know how to transplant yourself!
Finally, I did transplant myself, once again. It was time to move from the newsroom and go into teaching; use, finally, that masters degree referred to earlier that wasn't needed to report the news.
"There is a simple answer to the question 'What is the purpose of our individual lives?" A.J. Ayer wrote. "They have whatever purpose we succeed in putting into them."
Yet, if you believe you are being guided by and toward a higher destiny, as I do, use what others know (their gifts and resources) to inform and enlighten yourself.
I've also successfully used relocation astrology as an essential tool to follow my guiding star. Through my sessions with Cait Benten, I'm finding, as we'd all like to do, a balance of the "right place" and the "right work" combined.

Self-Employment
Job Tips For The Frustrated Job Seeker
by: Tom Smith
There is nothing more frustrating and depressing when you are out of work and trying to find a job and your job search is going no where. Don't feel bad, you are not alone and there is a good reason why searching for a new job can be so difficult. There is no doubt the job market has changed. 30 years ago when I applied for my first job I remember answering an ad in the paper, calling and speaking to a real person, going in for the interview, filling out a application, had the interview and was offered the $3.75 and hour shipping job. Things are not that simple today. Back then there was no voice mail, no email, you mailed in a typed resume, who had a fax at home? You called and talked to a real person. You may of filled out a application but not the dozen forms you need to today. And you never had to prove you were legally allowed to work in the United States.
Today if you are looking for a job how to you stand out in the impersonal hiring environment that exists in most companies. If you apply online you are competing against dozens if not hundreds of others. Competition is stiff for a most jobs and a human may never even see your resume. Are there steps you can follow that will improve your chances? After being unemployed for several months after 3 years of self employment and becoming more depressed and frustrated in not finding a job, I took my job search to a new level which finally paid off in a new job.
I had been self employed for 3 years but after a divorce and starting life over, my self employment was no longer working. I had to bite the bullet and start looking for a job. The first mistake I realized was my resume was not working. I had updated it to reflect my self employment which was not related to my previous career. I was trying to find a position similar to my previous career in the graphics and computer support industry. By starting my work history with my self employment it made it look like I had been out of the industry even longer and my skills even more outdated. I was just shooting myself in the foot. I changed my self employment to reflect my computer skills so while I had been out of the industry for awhile I wasn't out of touch. Some employers have doubts about people who have been self employed. They think they are going to go back to their own business or worse they only want a job so they can use company resources for their own gain. In my case I was able to explain that I had an opportunity to work at home and spend time with my preschool son, it had been for family reasons. Most employers respect that.
To begin with you really need to take a hard look at your resume. If you have always worked in one area and are applying for a position similar to those you have had in the past then your resume may just need some updating and polish. There are a number of good books and websites on resume writing. If you really need help then a resume service may be money well spent.
How many resumes do you have? There is no reason you can't have several. I was applying for a variety of unrelated positions. I would of looked "over qualified" or my experience would of been too unrelated for the position if I stuck with just one standard resume. I created a "general" resume that listed a variety of skills that could fit any number of non specific jobs. You can have one that is very specific for the industry you are applying for and there is no reason you can't change it to a specific company especially if it will be scanned in and checked for "keywords" Some companies scan for keywords or buzzwords related to the position, their company or industry. Even if you are the most qualified person for that position, if your resume doesn't have those keywords, it will never get seen.
In addition to having a few different resumes you should have it in several different formats also. If you need to mail it in then a nice easy to read printed resume is in order. Same if you will be faxing it in. If you email your resume then your cover letter will be the body of your email and your resume will be attached. Most employers request it be in a word .doc format or text but you can also use a pdf format. If you have your own website why not post it online with a link in your email. That way if your attachment can't be read they can print it off the internet. For example the link could be http://www.yourwebsite.com/yourresume.html. You should also have a unformatted text only resume for uploading to online job sites.
Be sure to include several ways to contact you. Home phone, cell phone, email. I had the unfortunate luck of having my cell phone and my home phone cut off for non payment within a few days of each other. As luck would have it someone I sent a resume to tried to contact me and couldn't get through. They did send me a email saying they couldn't reach me. I was able to call them and get a interview. Don't leave anything to chance. And if they leave you a message get back to them ASAP while your resume is still on their desk. When you get a interview, be on time, be prepared, do your research about the company you are interviewing with. You can usually find most everything you need off their company website. Come prepared with extra resumes, helpful if you have to fill out a application. Also have copies of your updated references. It is best to have more than 3. Some companies want professional references including past employers, others want personal references of persons not related to you. Be prepared for both.
Where to find a job? Dig! And keep digging! You may never know where one will show up. In some ways the internet has made job searches easier with a variety of job sites to search. You should probably set up accounts at the large sites like hotjobs and monster which will allow you to post your resume and apply directly to postings Also take a look at sites like indeed.com. They are a search engine of sorts for jobs. They search several jobs sites at once. Saves time from going to each site. Post your resume so employers can find you. ASK! Don't be afraid to let everyone you know that you are looking for a job. Drop a email to anyone who might know someone who might have a job opening. You might be surprised how many people really do want to help you. Network your pants off! If you don't ask no one can help you. Search everyday. Try and send out at least one resume a day if not more. Pick up the early edition of the Sunday paper. Send out 5-10 at a time. And keep sending them even after you have interviews set up. You can easily fall behind two or three weeks if you stop sending resumes in hopes of that job offer coming through. Nothing better than telling someone, "I'm sorry I accepted another position" Apply for every job you are remotely interested in even if you don't think you are qualified. Every job listed always has a laundry list of qualifications and requirements. In a perfect world they would find the perfect person that would match every requirement. But employers know that person doesn't exist and they are looking for someone who closely matches and they feel will be a good fit. At the worst you will never hear from them. At the best they will offer you a job or maybe something different within their company. You can always turn it down. Even if it turns out to be something you really don't want to do, it might help you get by for awhile until a better position comes along. Never be afraid to apply to any job!
Most of all don't give up hope, the right job will happen at the right time. Remember to take care of yourself. Go for a walk, get plenty of rest, do something you enjoy just for yourself. As long as you keep moving in a forward direction, if someone asks you what you have been doing to find a job you can proudly say "this is what I have been doing" Persistence will pay off. Good luck.

HOW TO OVERCOME STOPPERS AND START YOUR BUSINESS(PART 2)
#1. Dont throw away your dream because you don't have the neccessary requirments,
( money, property, building, location etc.) to start . Never you surrender your dream to
forces of poverty. Never you alow lack of money to determine your dream or your goal in
business. There is always a way out of financial crises only if you can stick a bit long. Just
hang in there!
There is always a way to raise the capital you need. You may have to save and count your
pennies, but somehow the money will come. Patience and persistence will always pay off
at the end.
Money flow to good ideas; dreams inspire creativity in money management.
There are things you cannot controle. They do come to us. But we can controle our idear
and what we do with them.

HOW TO OVERCOME 'STOPPERS' AND START YOUR BUSINESS(part 1).
Abraham Lincoln told a story about a blacksmith who stuck a long round iron bar in the coal until
it was red-hot. Then he put it on the anvil, where he hammered it flat to make a sword. When he
was finished, he was most unhappy with it. So, he put it back into the red-hot coal and decided
to broaden the flat part out a bit and make a garden tool. That didn't please his fancy either. He
put the bar back into the coal, rouded it a bit, and then shaped it into a horseshoe. This effort al
so failed miserably. As a last resort, he put the bar into the coals one more time. He removed it
from the hot fire, wondering if there was anything else he could make from it. Deciding that
there was nothing, he merely stuck it into a barrel of water. At the resulting hiss, he said, "well,
at least I made a fizzle out of it".
Your dream and vision of starting something good , something worthwhile, and being your own
boss don't have to fizzle.
Socces is not as easy as it looks. The fear ot starting a new thing is sure to grip us at the onset.
Yor life can sizzle, and your problem can be overcomed if you will stand up to the challenge an
get to' DOING IT'.
Stop looking for shortcuts, it will cut you dream short. Most acclaimed shortcuts are disaster in
disguise. Because someone writes a book about their succes doesn't mean you can achieve
overnight what it took years of experince to bring them into. It is not that God can't give it to
you quickly; it's that you need time, preparation and in some cases a major overhaul to handle it.
Remember, 'IF YOU GROW UP YOU WILL STAY UP , BUT IF YOU JUMP UP YOU WILL
COME DOWN!'
Great activities don't necessarily mean greater effectiveness. One day you're going to survive
only because you've got the real thing. One day its going to be truth or consequences. One day
you're going to have to walk with God when you cant understand or explain whereHe's taking
you. Because somebody hangs out with you, admiring and emulating you does'nt mean they're
with you. Such a time of despiration and rejection, would ou rather throw in the towel or hang in
there and WORK HINGS OUT.
To reach you goal you'll have to go through storms. There will be days when you'll wonder how
you're going to suvive. At such time everey thing you think yu know will seam not to be true. But
by Gods grace you will overcome. Just hang in there! Hinderances reveals the the strength of
you vision. Stop worrying, God will provie what you need to start in ways that will amaze you.
Your accomplisment may bring you some joy, but only in God will you find fullnes of joy.
Some day you'll have tears in your eyes and dirts under your fingernails. But in spite of the
scrapes and bruises you'll have a joy that causes you to sing at midnights and a sense of missoin
that makes you want to start something great again. Someday all you can do is stand. When you
cannot seem to put one foot in front of the other stand! Realise there's never been a day that
lasted forever. Don't give up and don't give in. Bite your lips, taste your tears and stand on what
God has for you. And remember. you're not operating in your own strngth. At that point when
you have looked around you and beholding your dream being sorrounded by obstacles. What
then shall you do?
In my next article we shall examine that.
Your Friend,
Edward Freedom
QOUTE OF THE DAY
The WINNER'S edge is not in a gifted birth,
a high IQ, or in talent.
The WINNER'S edge is all in the attitude, not aptitude.
Attitude is the criterion for succes!
