Nigeria Job Vacancy: Postdoctoral Fellow – Cassava Transformation (Ref: DDG-R4D/PDF/CT/11/12)

Background: The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow – Cassava Transformation.
IITA is an international non-profit research-for-development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our R4D is anchored on the development needs of sub-Saharan Africa. We develop agricultural solutions with our partners to tackle hunger and poverty by reducing producer and consumer risks, enhancing crop quality and productivity, and generating wealth from agriculture. We have more than 100
internationally recruited scientists from about 35 countries and 900 nationally recruited staff based in various stations across Africa.

Position/Responsibilities:
The primary tasks will include:
  • Develop efficient protocols for tissue culture and transformation of farmer preferred cultivars of cassava
  • Develop gene constructs and generate transgenic cassava for abiotic stress (PPD and drought) tolerance
  • Generate and analyze disease (CMD, CBSD and Bacterial blight) resistant cassava transgenics under laboratory, greenhouse and field conditions
  • Involve in herbicide tolerant cassava research
  • Collaborate with cassava breeders and other relevant Scientists at IITA for building strategy for cassava transgenic research
  • Collaborate with Advance Research Institutes and other CG centers
  • Publish research findings and communicate outcomes
  • Contribute in training of staffs and students working in Plant Transformation Unit
  • Contribute to capacity strengthening of national partners
  • Participate actively in annual review and planning meetings, resource mobilization, and contribute to strategic research planning.
Educational Qualifications:
The candidate should have a Ph.D. in Biotechnology/Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Life Sciences with specialization in Tissue culture and Plant Transformation.
Core Competencies:
  • Strong knowledge and experience in tissue culture and plant transformation
  • Knowledge of gene cloning and construct development
  • Knowledge of molecular characterization and other relevant analysis of transgenic
  • Knowledge of biotic and abiotic constrains of cassava
  • Demonstrated ability to write and publish journal articles
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya.
General information: Initial appointment is for two years. IITA offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
